Legal wrangling likely to continue in HD-105 recount

The legal dispute about how votes should be recounted in the House District 105 contest continued in a Dallas County court Tuesday.  There were a number of issues to be addressed, including whether Judge Jim Jordan had jurisdiction over the case and if so-called emphasis votes should be counted.

The outcome of the recount in the race between state Rep. Linda Harper-Brown (R-Irving) and Democrat Bob Romano could change the balance of power in the state House.

Democrats argued that voters who elected straight-party voting should have their votes counted, even if they also voted for a Democratic candidate in a race.  Electronic voting machines automatically unselect votes for these races. Democrats said election law requires these votes be counted, according to the Dallas Morning News.

Sitting Dallas judge leaves Republican Party, joins Democrats

Dallas County Democrats can add another county judge to their ranks: Dallas County Criminal Court Judge Elizabeth Crowder has switched her party affiliation from Republican to Democrat.

"We're happy to welcome Judge Crowder to the Democratic Party," Dallas County Democratic Party Chair Darlene Ewing said in a statement.
